ABSTRACT
This chapter conveys what it is to become a primary school director in the youngest country in the world; Timor Leste (Portuguese for East Timor), which gained full independence in May 2002. The historical and policy context of school leadership is summarized with special reference to the distribution and use of power in the state's public education system.
