In 1855. onc hundred years ago. it tirst became possible in this country to form limited liability companies by the now familiar process of registration. Business corporations enjoying limited liability had. indeed. been known for a much longer period. but owed their existence to Royal Charters or to special Acts of Parliament. This procedure has always remained available but it was. and is. an expensive and protracted affair.
