ABSTRACT

We began this study with a brief analysis of the distinguishing features of religious traditions versus spiritual systems to better identify ‘spiritual art’. We recognised that the originating spiritual experience of ‘gnosis’ or ‘revelation’ is at the core of the religion, serving as both overall rationale and general reference. For a clearer identification of a spiritual system and to conduct a comparative analysis of several systems, it is necessary to identify and isolate spiritual practices. Since the primary focus of a spiritual system rests on the assertion that the systematic technology of practices will advance and develop consciousness, the art, in turn, reflects this primary focus.
