ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we briefly describe the most prevalent psychiatric disorders that the pastor may encounter in the congregation. We include the following disorder categories: anxiety disorders, mood disorders, psychotic disorders, neurocognitive disorders, and somatic symptom disorders. In Chapter 4, we describe several additional disorders that are somewhat less prevalent, yet still reasonably common. Although other psychiatric disorders may be found in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth edition, (DSM-5), 1 we believe our list is fairly comprehensive and that most of the serious mental health problems among adult parishioners can be located in these two chapters.
