ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we continue to describe several major categories of psychiatric disturbance that ministers may encounter in their work. Although these disorders are somewhat less prevalent than depression and anxiety problems, they will occur nonetheless. In this chapter, we summarize trauma-related disorders, substance use disorders, sleep-wake disorders, and sexual disorders. As in Chapter 3, we provide subsections that address presenting complaints, common features and symptoms, subtypes, and key indicators for each disorder. A summary and guidelines section encapsulates the primary factors for the minister to consider when responding to a parishioner who may suffer from a particular disorder.
