ABSTRACT

Roughly one-quarter of American children will suffer from a psychological disorder at some point in childhood or adolescence. 1 , 2 Anxiety disorders are the most frequent conditions in children, followed by behavior disorders (including ADHD), mood disorders, and substance use disorders. Throughout childhood and adolescence, boys are diagnosed with psychological disorders at higher rates than girls for all of the established DSM-5 disorders except eating disorders. 3 In this chapter, we present the essential features of the most common disorders of childhood and adolescence. We have selected disorders that are most likely to impact children and families in the church.
