ABSTRACT
Conflict, ranging from low-level tensions to escalated violence, is a central character in the story of mining. Minerals have fuelled wars and inspired revolutions. They have shaped the course of world events and their influence has stretched far beyond the locales where the ore is actually unearthed. At more humble scales, nearer to the sites of extraction, mining has also sparked conflict with local communities.
