ABSTRACT

Being prepared for an interview is the most important step to getting the job. As I mentioned earlier, you should never take a meeting with anyone without Googling that person first. This applies to entry-level jobs as well. Having said that, allow me to let you in on a little secret. When applying for a job of any kind these days, you should assume that the prospective employer will Google you. Therefore, I highly recommend that you be very careful of posting personal things on the web, as they could come back to haunt you. That includes YouTube, Facebook…anyplace where people can check you out. The toga party at the frat house might have been fun. That picture of you, half dressed in a sheet with a couple of drinks in your hands might be a hoot to you and your friends. But, you know when it won’t be funny? The day you are up for a job that you really, really want…and you don’t get it because someone in the company Googled you and got the wrong impression. This happens, I kid you not. My rule of thumb is, if you wouldn’t want your mother or grandmother to see it, you don’t want a prospective boss to see it either. What may seem to be cute, fun, and even innocent at the time, may not feel so fun if it kills your chance at a job.
