ABSTRACT

Making and listening to music is one of the most pervasive aspects of human life. Music infuses our world, providing us with rich and emotional experiences. From the earliest days of our life, our attention is drawn to our parents’ singing, which provides comfort and assurance. The maternal lullaby is a near universal feature of human cultural life. Research has consistently shown infants and toddlers are drawn to the melodic properties of the voice. The brain and auditory system are set up to attend closely to human singing, and it is now believed this predisposition plays a role in infant-parent bonding.
