ABSTRACT

It would be silly to ask if a machine can perform its operations confidently. But when it comes to human activity, confidence is a term we all use freely. We admire television personalities for their confident manner. We discover, after we have been doing a job for a while, that we become far more confident. At times, we lack confidence, and try to prevent others from sensing this reality. Other times, we may even advertise low confidence, perhaps as a means of social reassurance, team building, or personal defensiveness. Confidence is both something we feel, on the inside, and something we display to others. Within any social situation, confidence is something that we quickly sense within other people.
