      ABSTRACT

After the 1982 season and at age 46, Vermeil resigned and admitted that he was burned out. He recognized that he continued to add hours to his workweek in order to be the best in his profession until he fi nally ran out of hours. He pushed himself and his team to be the best until, “ I fi nally ran out of things to push with. I couldn’t relax. I couldn’t turn it off ” (Coates, 1997. p. 3C).
