ABSTRACT

Before the late 1970s, Uyghurs were constrained by a lack of media access. The growth of the Internet substantially boosted Uyghur diasporic advocacy efforts by acting as a forum and venue for easier and cheaper communication between Uyghur diasporic groups and like-minded activists (Gladney, 2004: 383–94). Digital communication has reinforced the force of the rhetoric and shared images that support a continuation of the Uyghur nationalist struggle in all its forms. The formation and growth of Uyghur diasporic websites has acted as a key component in transforming Uyghur diasporic activism.
