ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the therapeutic metaphor as a story writing experience, having much in common with the rich legacy of fairy tales we all remember from our childhoods. Fairy tales are an excellent example of how metaphor can be used as both a literary and therapeutic device. Lawrence uses metaphorical images for the purpose of describing an experience. Even everyday occurrences and events can provide the raw material out of which to create a unique therapeutic metaphor. The activity of bidding was then introduced to metaphorically match the custody and visitation battle the child was experiencing. The fact that The Wizard of Oz story has appeal for all ages points to the degree of relational familiarity it contains. Blue Sparkle was the story of a wonderful little fish who wiggled his tail so quickly that no one could catch him. The story itself the characters, events, and settings must speak to the common life experience of those listening.
