ABSTRACT

Interspersed therapeutic suggestions are subtly defined or underscored during the storytelling process by way of vocal dynamics. While the child's conscious mind is absorbed in the literal aspects of the story, important therapeutic suggestions that deal with the presenting problem can be interspersed throughout the storytelling process. As the therapist grows increasingly familiar with the metaphorical framework, the three-level communication namely the storyline, the interspersed suggestions, and the sensory interweaving, unfold together in an integrated and unified manner. The living metaphor is an excellent complement to the storytelling metaphor because it helps to 'anchor' or 'ground' the therapeutic message in an actual physical experience. A treatment plan utilizing the therapeutic metaphor as a means of unconsciously restructuring the enuretic problem was implemented. Possibly the most potent element of the therapeutic metaphor is demonstrated here in the implication that quietly surrounds the story.
