ABSTRACT
This chapter reviews research on three topics related to L2 lexical processing: the processing of complex word processing, the processing of multiword units, and semantic processing in L2. Research in all these three areas has considered how L1 affects the representation and processing of these linguistic units and to what extent L2 speakers are able to develop L2-specific processing strategies or mental representations. Additional topics include whether complex words and multiword units are represented and processed holistically or analytically and whether the same or different neural substrates are involved in L1 and L2 semantic processing.
