ABSTRACT

This chapter on L2 parsing begins with an introductory section where background information about parsing research is provided. This includes discussions of syntactic ambiguity, the garden-path effect, and models of sentence processing. The three subsequent sections review research related to three topics: the role of L1 in L2 parsing (particularly in relation to verb subcategorization and relative clause attachment), the controversy regarding the use of lexicosemantic and syntactic information in L2 parsing, and the relationship between working memory and L2 sentence processing. The discussion of each topic includes an explanation of the research issues involved, summaries of sample studies, and where possible, issues that remain.
