ABSTRACT
In previous chapters I have discussed the nation and the Internet as significations. The nation, I argue, is lived and experienced in Malaysia as inextricably interwoven with understandings of race and religion. As a signification the Internet emerges from a multiplicity of histories and assumptions about technology that accompanied its introduction into the Malaysian social imaginary in the middle of the 1990s. These same implicit understandings are also the foundation from which the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) mega project was envisioned. This chapter discusses the MSC project as a uniquely Malaysian manifestation of the imbrication between the nation and the Internet.
