ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book examines how Japan's heritage conservation policy and practice at home and abroad intersected with Japanese national identity and sense of nationalism and was a key element in the execution of Japan's cultural diplomacy. It demonstrates how Japan's foreign policy and the projection of its national identity abroad are interlinked by its support for heritage projects as part of its diplomacy, it examines in detail Japan's involvement in cultural heritage conservation projects in Hue, Vietnam. The book examines the relationship between cultural diplomacy and foreign policy and how this intersected with Japanese perceptions of national interest. The case study shows that the Japanese heritage conservation approach, policy and legal frameworks have influenced the overall development of heritage policy, legislation and practice in Vietnam through cooperative projects largely administered through UNESCO/Japanese funding or bilaterally through Japanese cultural diplomacy.
