ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces Parents to different attitudes to Grange High which have already been raised by the Principal, students and teachers. Parents also acknowledged that sections of the Grange community disparage the school, 'putting their nose in the air'. Recent statistics indicate that the Grange community has a low school completion rate, with only 23 per cent of the population having completed school compared with the regional completion figure of 35 per cent. Of the parents it spokes with, two had university qualifications, three had partners with a university qualification and one parent had a TAFE diploma. The parents we interviewed had few regrets about leaving school early and did not exhibit any resentment towards school or teachers. It was also clear that the lack of formal qualifications among these Grange parents did not indicate that they were not engaged with their child's education or that they did not encourage their child to remain at school.
