ABSTRACT

Francis James, Principal of Grange High, has taught and held leadership positions in the government school sector in New South Wales (NSW) for over four decades. Francis accounts for the exponential growth of management over leadership in the changing nature of schools which are more complicated, more complex and more challenging than ever before. The early consultative leadership style described by Francis requires time which is no longer available within the new regime of policy intervention and associated accountability structures. Parents of children who currently attend Grange High have a significant role to play in the interaction between Grange and the broader community. One section of the community which is particularly supportive of Grange is the business community, a support actively pursued by Francis. During the time covered by the research, the Principal's leadership and management was framed by the broad parameters of the education revolution.
