ABSTRACT

The issue of environmental sustainability in general has a strong normative salience. It is of course important to be analytical about the generation of unsustainability. But it is as equally important to be solution oriented if sustainability is to be achieved at all. What kinds of solutions will be put forward and their degrees of efficacy quite depend on the perception of how the current unsustainable trend is caused. This entails an explicit and correct ontological position about the environmental problematique and its relationships to human society. For any research and practical endeavour towards sustainability to be efficacious, it is quite necessary to clarify the ontological position at an early stage.
