ABSTRACT

Although the original experiments carried out by Guglielmo Marconi were conducted using centimetric waves, it was not long before he realized that the known physical laws governing the propagation of electromagnetic waves were being fulfilled and that he could expect line-of-sight ranges and no more. Accordingly he began to employ higher masts and longer wavelengths in an effort to increase his ranges to the maximum. To his surprise, he began to achieve distances which were greater than could be accounted for by theoretical physics. Greatly encouraged, he pushed on to even longer wavelengths and found the ranges extending still further, stretching to a hundred miles or more.
