ABSTRACT
Piracy has been a constant activity of the sea-going peoples of the Aegean from remote antiquity until recent times. Even at the end of the eighteenth century it was an Aegean custom for the proceeds of a voyage, whether commercial or piratical, to be halved, one part passing to the shareholders of the ship, the other equally divided among the crew.
