ABSTRACT

This sura is entirely from Medina. It takes its name from the siege of Medina in April 627 (xi. 5) by the Meccans and various ‘confederates’ (Medina, 35–9). There are also passages concerning Muḥammad's marriage with Zaynab bint-Jaḥsh about the same time, and other matters concerning his wives (Medina, 329–31, 284–8).
