Come to the Abbot's quarters without reservation to inquire the Way. I will always forgive your lack of propriety, as would a father.' [Recorded by] a certain person8 at T'ai-pai [Mountain].9
2 On the second day of the seventh month in the first year of Pao-ch'ing, [Dogen] visited the Abbot's quarters. Dogen asked: 'Now it is said in all corners of the world that transmission is outside the scriptures;10 this is the great meaning of the First Patriarch's coming from India. What does this signify?'
