Extracts from chapter IX, ‘The Place of Defoe’s Fictions in his Life’, in William Minto’s Daniel Defoe, a volume in the important English Men of Letters series, edited by John Morley. The book first appeared in 1879: the text is that of the uniform edition (1895), pp. 140–57 (with omissions). Minto (1845–93), Scottish critic and journalist, was Professor of Logic and Literature at Aberdeen University from 1880.
