ABSTRACT

Two things, and two things only, made the production of this gloomy and indeterminate play worthwhile. The first was the illuminating production - illuminating is the proper word - of Theodore Komisarjevsky, and the second the vivid little character sketches given by the players of the less important characters. The latter had all the colour and distinction one associates with, say, a box of Russian toys, and served to brighten up a very Russian atmosphere, which otherwise was about as cheerful as a wet Sunday afternoon in the Caledonian Road.
