Chesterton once maintained that of Dickens's novels it could be said that none of them was a separate work of art, but that each might be considered as a suitable length cut from some flowing substance called Dickens. In effect, he argued, there was no reason why Mr. Turvey-drop should not bob up in ‘Martin Chuzzlewit’ or any other character appear in any other novel.
