ABSTRACT

George Calderon (1868-1915) was the son of the painter Philip Calderon. He was an exceptional scholar and linguist and had spent the years 1895-7 in St Petersburg. His play ‘The Fountain’ was performed by the Stage Society in 1911. He was killed in the Dardanelles. This extract is from his lengthy and extremely influential introduction to his translations of ‘The Seagull’ and ‘The Cherry Orchard’ (London, Grant Richards, 1912). See also No. 14.
