ABSTRACT

THE impoverished land surrounding Yits’un forces the people to struggle for new resources. We have seen that they engage in a number of productive enterprises besides agriculture, of which the most important are trading, the transport of goods, basketry, and papermaking. From these occupations they get as much income as they get from the land. The people should be able to maintain a standard of living above that of the average Chinese peasant. Is this true in fact?
