ABSTRACT

UNLIKE the hired laborer, who is paid solely on the basis of time or of production, a tenant has an interest in the productivity of the land. With his payment of annual rent, he takes over from the owner all responsibility for the exploitation of the farm, and it is he who must accept the risk and provide the working capital. He may work the farm himself or hire laborers instead, whichever he chooses, for all income in excess of the sum he pays the landlord is his to dispose of in any way he sees fit.
