ABSTRACT
THE WORK which has been done in recent years on Isaac Newton's unpublished manuscripts has not affected his stature as the brilliant mathematical thinker of the Principia and the Opticks. But it has altered the context in which we now see Newton, for it appears from the unpublished papers that this major figure in the scientific revolution of the seventeenth century was still deeply involved in ideas which we have supposed typical of the Renaissance.
