ABSTRACT

McCulloch's work as an author really falls into two main parts. Firstly there is his work on general problems of economic theory and policy, his political economy, by which he first made his reputation and by which he is largely remembered today. Secondly there is his ‘statistical’ work, concerned with the collection and publication of vast amounts of data, together with a fair amount of commentary and analysis – as for instance in the Commercial Dictionary article on Banks – on the basis of which he built a second reputation. 400 McCulloch's political economy will be considered first; and this will be followed by a discussion of the statistical work.
