ABSTRACT

before training begins, new workers should be inducted or “introduced” to the works instead of being sent immediately to the bench or machine where they will work. In more and more undertakings they are taken for a tour of the main departments, are told about the firm's organization, the raw materials used, where they come from, the firm's products and the markets where they are sold. These may be illustrated by a film, especially where the raw materials come from abroad or the products are sold in foreign markets. Someone from the personnel department will tell about the firm's labour policy, the rules of the works and its welfare, sports, and recreation clubs. All this can be done in a few hours and it stimulates the worker's interest in the firm and its work, and also in his own job by showing how the work he will do is an essential part in the making of a great or intricate machine, an article of clothing or furniture, a processed food, or other final product.
