ABSTRACT
The anthropological literature on the Muslim World has often stressed the roles played by ‘Saints’ in popular Islam. Spiritual heirs of the Sufis – the ‘wool wearing’ mystics who arose in the medieval middle east – such figures as the North African Marabout and the pir of Muslim South Asia, have a variety of important functions in the wider societies of which they are a part.
