Candles, which are said to have been used by king Alfred to measure time, were subsequently used at sales by auction (Lat. auctio, increase—of bids) for the same purpose—to limit the time for the bid—and an Outcry, ‘Come, who bids ? come, who bids ? ’ was subsequently the term used for this method of public sale. 128
