ABSTRACT

I WILL beg my reader s indulgence while I devote a few pages to the examination of the much misunderstood question of slavery in Africa, in the endeavour to explain as briefly as possible both what " slavery " is, and what are the means that have been used in the past, and are proposed in the future for suppressing it. In the first place, it is necessary to distinguish the proper meaning of certain terms too often carelessly and confusion of inaccurately used, and to discriminate be-Termstween various phases of the question.
