ABSTRACT

Sexuality is an important issue within British schools. Significant numbers of teachers, student teachers and other workers in schools are lesbian, gay or bisexual. Guardians and parents of secondary school students may be lesbian, gay or bisexual. It is estimated that at least 10 per cent of gay men and 20 per cent of lesbians are parents (Patterson, 1996). Many secondary school students identify themselves as gay or lesbian and disclose this to friends or teachers (Savin-Williams, 1998). Indeed, there is evidence that some children may identify as gay or lesbian in the primary years (Epstein, 1994).
