ABSTRACT

It seems as though everyone is complaining with bitter disappointment that Chinese cities begin to look more and more alike in the new modernization process. But if we search in the depth of our heart, we will find that distinct personalities of different cities have long settled there. They are either ancient and peaceful, or rich and glitzy, or romantic and seductive. Or exist merely as the way station to other destinations because of their location. They are nonetheless all-unique and cannot be duplicated. All those recognizable street names, palatable fares, and familiar dialects are the non-transplantable details of a city. They record the modest and tranquil atmosphere of everyday urban life, and shape the formation of urban characters. Of course, there are also those men and women, who live in the cities and are immersed in these details. They are also the endless sights of the cities.
