ABSTRACT

A major intention of the research was to determine how the alchemical Mercurius was both experienced and portrayed by Jung based on a range of primary materials, biography and Hermeneutic enquiries. Based on such an investigation, I assembled the idea of a soothsaying meta-narrative in which the grail legend, an alchemical transformation mystery and the astrological precession of the equinoxes all converged at a momentous time in history synchronistic with Jung's life. In this way a life myth was formulated in which his esoteric identity was brought more fully to light, centred on his role as herald and prophet of the Aquarian Age. A number of Jung's synchronistic experiences were also interpreted from this perspective. Overall, each chapter can be considered a self-contained finding that incrementally built upon and corroborated such a perspective.
