ABSTRACT

Respite is considered to be any form of absence from the work setting, when everyday pressures of the job are absent or diminished, including days off work, weekends, holidays, and vacations as the longest form of continuous respite. While most respites can be profiled based on goals and needs ascribed to them or based on characteristics such duration, location, the respite experiences, and level of detachment, some types of respites comprise a case of their own. This chapter introduces the different types of respite characteristics that have been surmised or found to be influential on the degree to which a respite can achieve its replenishing goal.
