ABSTRACT

Respite features set aside, the vacation experience is subjective, dependent on the interaction between environmental factors and personal characteristics. The latter may determine the manner by which individuals interpret demands, opportunities, and meaning of the respite, as well as the manner by which work stress and stressors are handled. This chapter delineates personality characteristics that have the power to affect the experience of relief through respite, its timing and duration, and its degree. These include demographic variables, personality traits, and employment factors.
