ABSTRACT

The article in Oggi of 12 June 1974 is equally worrying. In it, the head of a scuola media, himself a teacher's leader, says 'It is useless to conceal that teachers are suffering a deep frustration, placed as they are between hammer and anvil, between pupils in revolt and a total lack of direction from the State, which has for many years left the schools to look after themselves. One proof of this state of mind is found in the fact that absenteeism among teachers is greater than that found in any other category of state employees.' The traditional English teacher's gown seems to be growing rather rare in this country, and there is no European equivalent at all. In France, a teacher's name may be placed on the Liste d' Aptitude and thereafter he moves up by way of professeur certifie to the rank of vice-principal on his way to the final goal of a headship.
