ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an outline of the degrowth alternative. First, it identifies it’s the epistemological roots and precursors of degrowth, focusing in particular on anti-utilitarianism. Second, the chapter explores the axis of criticism towards the growth regime, along with the two elements of this: ecological unsustainability and social unsustainability. Third, linking the different approaches (from degrowth movements, grassroots experiences, thought masters), the chapter identifies the most shared points of a political agenda aimed at the implementation of a degrowth society. The chapter touches on how degrowthers imagine the transition to degrowth, i.e. their political strategy. Finally, it looks at the reasons why degrowth, in its current structuration, is not able to really oppose the growth paradigm. On the contrary, it shares with it some basic features, that prevent degrowth from counteracting growth.
