ABSTRACT

When we are motivated, we are willing to expend energy on a particular task. In this chapter, we explore the importance of motivation for effective career management and how we can work with clients who are struggling to see the need to change.

The brain likes habits; it prefers to follow established neural pathways carved by previous experience. Increasing motivation requires more than a logical costs–benefits analysis that might bring your client out of a state of denial but not engage the heart. We explore how motivational interviewing may be used to move beyond oughts and shoulds and create a felt desire to take action.

This chapter should be read in tandem with Chapters 12 and 15, as these topics and the coaching methods outlined are closely intertwined.
