ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we explore the emotional stages that occur in a typical transition – numbness, depression, trying out, letting go and integration – often mapped out as a curve.

In supporting clients to access opportunities, we can add value by helping clients develop the confidence to sell themselves effectively and to present themselves positively, using body language and tone of voice to convey competence, warmth, presence and power. This will help them form a strong connection with others. Networking is also a key skill, as people in the client’s network may provide change opportunities, mentoring or useful information.

Methods include rescripting internal dialogue, visualisation, role play, developing more positive internal dialogue and practising “power poses”. The client can be encouraged to think about how they would enter a situation “as if” they were confident.
