ABSTRACT

Resilience is the ability to handle setbacks and manage uncertainty. In making a transition, clients need the skills to handle the inevitable uncertainties that accompany change. Managing change well can affect one’s self-concept, levels of curiosity, risk-taking and ability to manage transition in the future. Therefore we have dedicated a chapter to exploring resilience, its sources (physical, cognitive, affective and spiritual) and how it can be strengthened.

Cognitive behavioural coaching (CBC) and solution-focused coaching (SFC) are both useful approaches for problem-solving. CBC explores the links between situations, thoughts, emotions, behaviour and physical sensations, and how negative automatic thoughts often determine our emotional reaction to a situation. Working with the client to dispute these thoughts leads to more positive emotional responses. SFC encourages clients to use their own resources to move towards their goals. Questions often include “exception seeking”, the “miracle question” and scaling.
