ABSTRACT

Different levels of listening can be identified. We explore how deep listening, when combined with reflection, can be used to demonstrate empathy, gently encourage the client to expand, challenge in a non-confrontational way and bring to light blind spots.

We also explore types of question and their purpose, how they can be used to direct the conversation, probe more deeply and elicit specific information from the client. A well-chosen question can also help the client to reflect more deeply and think about issues from a new perspective.

Challenging the client is one of the trickier skills. There are many different ways of challenging, including asking questions to reframe issues, reflecting back contradictions, sharing information and giving feedback. All require a strong relationship between the coach and client for challenging to succeed.

Finally, we look at the skill of using metaphor and analogies to aid communication.
