ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the main methodological options available for L2 motivation researchers. It describes the most important research methods used to analyse L2 motivation in the past, covering quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods studies. The discussion also outlines some promising future directions, including adopting a complex dynamic systems approach and researching unconscious motivation. In order to illustrate the theoretical principles, the chapter presents detailed outlines of 20 selected empirical studies of L2 motivation, which can serve as research templates.
