ABSTRACT

After obtaining the symbolic representation of a family life space, it is useful to consider what the symbolic images might be conveying. The chapter on interpreting the symbols first and foremost indicates that the clients are the best guide for determining the actual meaning of the symbols. With that point in mind, some ideas concerning the meaning of the symbolic placements have been noted and suggested by long-time users of the FLSD process. The guidelines offer suggestions for understanding the symbols and for engaging clients by suggesting ideas about the symbolic placements. The chapter reviews ideas from early use of the process by identifying the control circle evaluation process. Other considerations for assessment include evaluating the size of the symbol and the distance between the symbols. This chapter includes an example of what is considered a healthy symbolic representation based on traditional understandings. It also provides an example drawing with suggestions for interpretation.
